BMEP

Developed in August 2021 by a group of Broadway musicians, music directors, and former Local 802 Executive Board members, BMEP aims to achieve a common goal of expanding access and of sharing knowledge of the unique skills of musical theater playing with musicians from historically underrepresented communities, including those of color, with disabilities, and from the nonbinary and transgender communities.

  • Alvin Hough, Jr., Co-Chair

    Alvin is currently the associate music supervisor for the Broadway run of Merrily We Roll Along and was most recently the music director and conductor of New York, New York. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of MUSE (Musicians United for Social Equity) and some of his other Broadway credits include Tina, The Color Purple and Once On This Island.   • Anja Wood, Co-Chair

    Anja Wood plays cello for Hamilton on Broadway, a diamond-certified musician. She is a versatile musician, performing and recording with icons David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Dave Matthews, Barbara Streisand, Chris Cornell, and Harry Connick, Jr. She has played with countless other performers, like Pearl Jam, Rufus Wainwright, Trey Anastasio, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Anja resides in New York City with her 2 daughters, and is also the founder and President of The Lelt Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to acutely malnourished children in Ethiopia.

  • Ian Weinberger

    Ian Weinberger is a New York-based music director. Regional: Titanic (Westchester Broadway Theatre, Hangar Theatre), My Fair Lady, Fanny Brice: America’s Funny Girl (Asolo Rep), Merrily We Roll Along and Pippin (The Music Theatre Company). Broadway: Hamilton, The Book of Mormon and Kinky Boots. New York: A New Brain (Encores! Off-Center), Titanic (Avery Fisher Hall) and Nobody Loves You. His orchestrations of Titanic were recently heard in the Griffin Theatre Company production at Theater Wit in Chicago, as well as in productions in London, Tokyo and Toronto. Broadway/Off-Broadway orchestras: Rocky, Side Show, Chaplin, Little Miss Sunshine and Death Takes a Holiday. TV: Peter Pan Live and The Sound of Music Live (NBC). Proud native of Evanston and graduate of Northwestern University.
